I was extremely pleased to have Dr. C Fred Bergsten,
Director of the Institute for International Economics(IIE) in
Washington, D.C., visit the Korea Development Institute(KDI)
under KDI's Distinguished Lecturer Program. Dr. Bergsten gave
special lecture on "World Trade Policy and a New Internatonal
Role for Korea" on April 21, 1989 at KDI. We, the Korean
audience, found the lecture extremely stimulating and Dr.
Bergsten's presentation was followed by a lively discussion on
the future international role of Korea. The present report
includes Dr. Bergsten's presentation and the questions and
answers that followed it.
Before he launched his present Institute in 1981, during
1977-81, Dr, Bergsten served in the US Government first as
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs and
afterward as Under Secretary for Monetary Affairs. Also, since
1967, he has been a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign
Relations, the Brookings Institution, and the Carnegie
Endowment for International Peace.
